What was it like when this lonely ruin was a thriving grand hotel and social destination? With so little of the building left to tell the story, interpretive graphics become a walk-around museum. The rich anecdotal history of the site is told through historical documents, picture postcards, photography, narrative and attention-getting headlines. A panel dedicated to wildlife of the area completes the experience of visiting this heritage park, situated adjacent to the Mission Reach hike and bike trail of the San Antonio River Walk.
Bordering the residential blocks of the King William historic district, the Southtown neighborhood is a linear connector between HemisFair Park (downtown San Antonio) and Blue Star. Three kiosks encourage foot traffic from downtown to Blue Star, via Southtown’s shopping street. Blue Star is a local destination for contemporary art, and trail head of the Mission Reach hike and bike trails, connecting in turn to Mission Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The cabinetwork incorporates decorative elements borrowed from the Victorian era homes of the area, capturing the character of the historic neighborhood.
